DIEM Programme

The Devices and Interoperability Ecosystem (DIEM) programme targets to define and open a completely new domain for technology and service innovation. The aim of the programme is to provide a wealthy research and business development area for the Finnish ICT industry and academia. The programme addresses the ecosystem building, key technology enablers, system architecture and tools issues, but especially complete service pilots that can be tested locally and copied globally.

Programme phases

DIEM programme began in June 2008. The first phase ran from June 2008 to June 2009. The first phase focused on collecting and studying use cases and creating common interoperability and interaction and user interface solutions. First concepts and prototypes were developed.

Second DIEM phase ran from July 2009 to June 2010. During the second phase, vertical work packages applied interoperability and interaction and user interface solutions in practice, doing real-life testing and piloting with business cases. Cross-domain concepts and demos were developed and global collaboration begun.

The third phase began in July 2010 and ended in December 2011. The third phase focused on packetization of DIEM solutions, continuing pilots and trials with DIEM ApplicationLab and disseminating the results. Twenty-eight partners (20 companies, 5 universities, 2 research centers and 1 organization) took part in third phase activities.

The fourth DIEM phase is scheduled to run in 2012. Instead of work packages of domains and enablers, the fourth phase focuses on large-scale pilots for real-life use. These pilots combine the results of the work packages from previous phases.

Funding

DIEM is co-funded by TEKES and partners. TEKES funding covers about 50 % of total cost.

Goals and results

DIEM goals are discussed in DIEM Strategic Research Agenda and DIEM White Paper. All DIEM results will be published on DIEM website. Major results will also be promoted in conferences, seminars and print media. Smart-M3 platform source code can be downloaded at Sourceforge.
