DIEM Thesis: Home Automation System for Supporting Home Living for Elderly People

Interoperability Work Package and Department of Automation and Systems Technology of Helsinki University of Technology present a new DIEM related Master of Science thesis "Home Automation System for Supporting Home Living for Elderly People" by Antti Liesjärvi.

In the literature survey part of the study, the software techniques and hardware possibilities for implementing different sectors of a home automation system and different methods for movement and activities recognition are examined. A pilot system, which consists of a server computer and home automation network, is implemented. The pilot system is placed in a private appartment. The monitoring user may access it via the Internet. For a first application of the pilot system, an application named Aktiivisuusvalpas is implemented. Aktiivisuusvalpas observes the movement and activity of a single person.

In the experimental part of the study, the possibility of getting useful information about the sensor events and activities of elderly people with the help of the pilot system's Aktiivisuusvalpas application are investigated. The aim of the system is to support independent living at home of elderly people and improve their safety. Finally, based on the tests, the pilot system's Aktiivisuusvalpas application is ascertained to offer useful information about the sensor events and activities of elderly people.

The language used in the thesis is Finnish.
