Paper About the Energy Consumption Service

Studies have shown that with constant feedback and awareness of one’s energy consumption the energy savings up to 15-20% depending can be achieved depending on the start level. These reductions are typically realized during the first few weeks of installation of the energy visualization / awareness system.

Dedicated energy visualization displays come in various forms from different companies. After the first weeks of usage dedicated displays are found forgotten from the corners of kitchen tables and different lockers. After the initial enthusiasm the interest to monitor energy consumption fades and the
consumption returns close to starting point. The energy consumption service described in this paper and implemented and piloted in the DIEM project
overcomes the challenges described above by providing not only visualization, but also notifications, alerts, and active load control based on real time energy prices.

The energy visualization was developed in the beginning of the DIEM project and further developed into a home energy management system (HEMS).
