Activity Monitoring System
The mission of 'Activity Monitoring System' demo is to show that safety at home can be enhanced and activities of daily life can be supported using home automation systems. The main user groups of this type of systems are elderly people and people with disabilities.
The proportion of elderly people to people in working age in industrialized countries is rising. Age brings along disabilities in cognition, in moving and in communications. Safety and feeling of safety are instrumental in being able to function independently. Monitoring and preventing dangers and accidents are of first priority. Automatic and remotely operated assistance in daily activities make living easier and more enjoyable.
Kitchen is an important place of activities monitoring and assistance. Food storage, food preparation, home appliances’ safety, eating meals, and handling of wastes are all usually activities performed in kitchens. Problems in this area can be of dire consequences: water leakages, appliance fires, fires caused by cooking, spoiled food, broken cooling systems, meals forgotten, garbage not disposed, etc.
Activity monitoring reveals both fast occurring problems such as food burning but also long term problems such as water leakages and lack of kitchen activities such as food preparation and waste management.
The activity monitoring schemes used in kitchens can be applied to other areas, such as bathrooms and living quarters, as well. They can even be extended to public and semi public areas such as hallways, yards, shops, etc.
